Stripped of Childhood
While nothing extraordinary, Upoh'a's upbringing was as comfortable as any within the city of Ala Mhigo. The eldest of three brothers, 'A spent much of his early life helping his mother and younger siblings. However their simple way of living came crumbling down in what seemed like an instant.The day Garlean boots stepped foot on Ala Mhigan soil, their world was thrown into turmoil. Their city, already hemorrhaging from it's infighting was easily toppled by the XIVth Imperial Legion. Upon the fall of the city, Upoh'a's mother made the difficult choice to flee their home with little more than the clothes on their back.As their family traversed the war torn land, Upoh'a took what he could only believe was the last sight he'd see of his homeland. Their once beautiful home now thick with black smoke, piercing searchlights slicing across the landscape. His youngest brother on his back, his mother lead the way; nothing to be heard but a soft cry coming from a red bundle nestled under a charred shrubbery.
Mirage
The Vurkhaia family's troubles were unfortunately far from over. Upoh'a watched as his mother coo'd to his new sibling; a small seeker with mismatched eyes. He remembered the first time the great gem of the desert came into view: Ul'dah. It was to be their peoples' salvation; an oasis in the war ravaged travels so many of the refugees sought out.The moment they approached the gates of the city, their caravan was met with resistance. 'A's mother held his youngest siblings, his other brother holding his hand tightly. He watched as his mother was pointed in the direction of the makeshift tents that littered the walls of the city, profanities being thrown by city residents.Upoh'a couldn't understand how people could be so cruel. Those set up in their tents were quick to come to his mothers aid, offering her a seat and a cup of stew from the fire. He looked back at those mocking them, anger bubbling in his belly. This wasn't the gem of the desert as they'd been told:It was nothing more than a mirage.
